Florida Veterans Benefits 2026: The Verified FL-14 Guide

VA disability rates for 2026, Florida's property-tax exemptions, and the 100% disabled veteran perks that are real vs rumored — every claim verified to statute.

By John Peters

Veterans-benefits content online is a minefield of outdated and flat-wrong claims. For a district with one of Florida’s densest veteran populations, here is the 2026 guide with every line verified — including the popular claims that didn’t survive verification.

VA Disability Compensation in 2026

The 2026 COLA is 2.8%, matching Social Security by law, effective December 1, 2025 (first full checks January 2026). From the official VA rate table, monthly rates for a veteran with no dependents: 10% — $180.42 · 50% — $1,132.90 · 100% — $3,938.58 (rates rise with dependents). If your rating or claim is stuck, free accredited help exists — see below; never pay anyone to file.

Florida’s Property-Tax Exemptions for Veterans

Three separate statutes, all filed with the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser by March 1 (miss it and the year is generally waived, with narrow late-file paths):

  1. $5,000 exemption — 10%+ disability (s. 196.24): honorably discharged, Florida resident, disabled 10% or more by wartime service; VA documentation is proof. Notably not limited to homestead property, and it can pass to an unremarried surviving spouse.
  2. Total ad valorem homestead exemption — 100% P&T (s. 196.081): service-connected, permanently and totally disabled veterans pay zero ad valorem property tax on their homestead; carries to an unremarried surviving spouse. Moving within Florida? It doesn’t transfer automatically — you re-apply at the new homestead — but if you buy between January 1 and November 1, the statute entitles you to a prorated refund of that year’s taxes on the new home. You can apply before your VA letter arrives; the exemption backdates to your application.
  3. Combat-related discount — 65+ (s. 196.082): a discount on homestead ad valorem tax equal to your VA disability percentage, for honorably discharged veterans 65 or older whose permanent disability is combat-related (the statute requires evidence identifying it as combat-related). Ask the property appraiser for the current form for this discount; the DR-501 series covers the exemptions above.

The caveat this site keeps repeating because it’s true: these exemptions reduce ad valorem taxes only. CDD assessments and other non-ad-valorem charges on a Hillsborough tax bill are not reduced — even at 100% P&T.

TRICARE For Life: The Part B Catch

For military retirees turning 65: TRICARE For Life is free Medicare-wraparound coverage that starts automatically once you have Medicare Parts A and B — no enrollment, no TFL fee. The catch that trips people every year: you must enroll in Part B and pay its premium ($202.90/month standard in 2026) or TFL doesn’t work. Medicare pays first, TFL second.

Free Help, Close to Home

Never pay a claims consultant. Hillsborough County’s accredited Veterans Service Officers work free at five locations — including the Brandon Regional Service Center and the Southshore center in Ruskin — and the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs staffs free claims examiners at every VA medical center (FDVA: 727-319-7440). Where to actually receive VA care in this district — the Riverview clinic, Sabal Park, and Haley — is covered in our VA care access guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is VA disability in 2026?

With the 2.8% COLA (effective December 1, 2025): $180.42/month at 10%, $1,132.90 at 50%, and $3,938.58 at 100% for a veteran with no dependents, per the official VA rate table. Rates increase with dependents.

Do 100% disabled veterans pay property taxes in Florida?

Not ad valorem taxes on their homestead: s. 196.081 gives 100% permanent-and-total service-connected veterans a full homestead exemption from ad valorem tax, which can carry to an unremarried surviving spouse. Non-ad-valorem charges like CDD assessments still apply. File with the county property appraiser by March 1.

Do disabled veterans get free tolls in Florida?

No. The only toll exemption (s. 338.155) applies to drivers of specially equipped vehicles certified for permanent upper-limb impairments through FDOT’s Disabled Toll Permit. No broad disabled-veteran toll exemption has become law as of mid-2026.

What is the deadline to file veteran property-tax exemptions in Florida?

March 1, with the county property appraiser (Hillsborough: hcpafl.org). Missing it generally waives the exemption for that year, with narrow late-filing paths tied to the TRIM notice and the Value Adjustment Board.

Do I need Medicare Part B for TRICARE For Life?

Yes. TFL activates automatically only when you have both Medicare Part A and Part B — and you must keep paying the Part B premium ($202.90/month standard in 2026). There is no separate TFL enrollment or fee.
